Following on from Jade, I thought that I might as well review this group too, as I often put them together, because they were also an American female trio who had their first hit in 1993. Because there had been a popular genre called New Jack Swing, apparently it made sense that these female groups would be in the New Jill Swing genre. Er, yes, if you say so.
SWV were Sisters With Voices (even though they weren’t actually sisters in that sense), featuring Cheryl, Tamara, and Leanne. Their first hit in the UK was in May 1993 when “I’m So Into You” reached no. 17. Next in June 1993 was “Weak” which reached no. 32. Now although this isn’t thought of as their most famous song, this was the only one of theirs that topped the chart in America, doing so for two weeks.
In August 1993 “Right Here” reached no. 3 to become their biggest hit in the UK. This is just about the only one you still hear on the radio as well, which is no surprise really. Someone came up with the great idea of sampling “Human Nature” which really makes this work. This is also known for featuring an uncredited contribution by Pharrell Williams, many years before he became a regular chart-topper himself.
Their debut album “It’s About Time” also did well, and there would be plenty more hits to come too. Next in February 1994 was “Downtown” which reached no. 19, followed in June 1994 by “Anything” which reached no. 24. After a break, they returned in May 1996 with “You’re The One”, which reached no. 13, and was their final Top Ten hit single in America.
In December 1996 “It’s All About U” reached no. 36, and in April 1997 “Can We” reached no. 18. They had their ninth and final UK hit single in September 1997 when “Someone” reached no. 34, so they definitely weren’t one-hit wonders. But it was at this point when their moment of fame came to an end. They are still going though, and they have now made five albums.
