Well I suppose I had to take the opportunity to do this one really. This is a group who have been acclaimed, but they only had a brief moment of fame in the early-80s. The Waitresses are an American rock group who formed in the late-70s. Although they made lots of songs, they are best-known for two, one of them being “I Know What Boys Like” (which didn’t chart in the UK, but did in the US and Australia).
But the one that really has endured is “Christmas Wrapping” (not to be confused with “Christmas Rappin'” by Kurtis Blow, or “Christmas Rapping” by Dizzy Heights). This was first released in 1981 but wasn’t a success, finally entering the chart in December 1982, and spent two consecutive weeks at no. 45, which surprisingly, is still its highest position in the UK (this was never a hit in America though).
This is of course the song that features the tale of the world’s smallest turkey, among other things. I would have to say that this is among my favourite 80s Christmas songs, and it’s always good to hear this on the radio, “Stop The Cavalry” is another good one from this era. As far as I know, no video was ever made for “Christmas Wrapping”, and there have also been several cover versions.
In more recent years, the chart usually gets swamped with old Christmas songs, and this is among them. Although this did make the Top 50 again in 2018, this has never been one of the more popular ones, it would be great if this did make the Top 40 eventually. And “I Know What Boys Like” finally made the chart in 1996 when this was the final hit single for Shampoo.
Thanks for your interest and support throughout the year. I hope that you all have a Happy Christmas, and I’ll be back with more soon.
